How a Bluetooth Device Radar Finds Lost Gadgets

"Radar" is a friendly name for something quite simple: your iPhone measuring how loudly nearby Bluetooth devices are shouting. Understanding how it works makes you much faster at actually finding things.

The physics in one paragraph

Every active Bluetooth device transmits packets at regular intervals. Your phone can hear these packets and record their received signal strength (RSSI). Radio signals weaken predictably with distance, so a stronger signal generally means a closer device. A radar app converts RSSI into an estimated distance or a percentage and updates it continuously as you move.

Using the radar well

  1. Scan first, then filter. A scan in an apartment building will show many devices. Look for your device's name, or for the entry whose distance is shortest.
  2. Move in straight lines. Walk a few steps in one direction and watch the number. If it improves, continue; if it worsens, turn around. This warmer/colder method converges fast.
  3. Use last-seen times. Device Finder's My Devices list records when each saved device was last detected. If your headphones were last seen an hour ago near full strength, they are in the house — start where you were then.
  4. Check level changes. Signal passes through floors imperfectly. If the number plateaus around 50–60% everywhere on one floor, try the floor above or below.
