How to extract a color palette from any image

A single photo can contain millions of distinct pixel values, but only a handful of colors that matter. Extracting a palette means reducing an image to those meaningful colors — the ones you could actually build a design, a room or an outfit around. Here's how to do it well on iPhone.

What makes a good palette extraction

  1. Choose your source image. Pick from your photo library or shoot with the camera. Evenly lit photos without heavy filters give the truest colors.
  2. Let extraction run. The app analyzes the image on your device and returns its distinct colors in seconds, each with a coverage percentage.
  3. Adjust the color count. Slide between 2 and 12 colors. Fewer colors gives you the essence; more reveals subtle accents.
  4. Inspect each color. Tap a swatch to see HEX, RGB and HSL values with one-tap copy, plus a Shade Explorer for lighter and darker variations.
  5. Export. Share the palette as a clean image for mood boards or clients, copy all hex codes as text, or save the image to your photo library.

Every extraction is saved to your history automatically, organized by date, so you can revisit a palette weeks later without keeping the original photo.

Tip: extract the same subject at two color counts — say 4 and 10. The 4-color version shows you the palette's structure; the 10-color version gives you the supporting tones to use for backgrounds, borders and hover states.

What to do with the palette

Paste hex codes into Figma, CSS or Canva; use RGB values in print prep; hand the exported palette image to a client as the starting point for a brand discussion. Because the codes come from a real photo, the palette already has the natural harmony that hand-picked colors often lack.
