How to Have a PDF Read Aloud on iPhone
Reports, papers, contracts, textbooks — PDFs are where reading piles up. Having them read aloud turns the backlog into something you can clear on a commute.
The quick answer
Import the PDF into Document Reader from the Files app, iCloud Drive or Google Drive, and tap play. A natural voice reads every page in order, each word highlights as it's spoken, and your position saves automatically.
Step-by-step: PDF to audio
- Open Document Reader → add a document. Pick the PDF from Files, iCloud Drive or Google Drive.
- Tap play. Reading starts at page one — or exactly where you left off last time.
- Follow along or lock the phone. Word-by-word highlighting keeps you oriented when you're watching; audio keeps going when you're not.
- Tune it: pick a voice, adjust the speed, skip by 10 seconds or by page.
Scanned PDFs (image-only files)
Some PDFs are just photographs of pages with no text layer — common with old scans and shared handouts. Document Reader's scan pipeline handles printed text via the camera too; see scan & listen for the flow.
Doesn't iOS do this already?
Partly — Speak Screen can read a visible page. Where a dedicated reader wins: continuous multi-page playback, exact-word resume, highlighting, speed memory and a library of your documents. The honest comparison lives in Speak Screen vs read-aloud apps.
